"We are the Meta" is a phrase taken from the webseries Red vs. Blue. It is spoken by a host of A.I. inhabiting one suit. The idea behind the A.I. is that they are all fragments of the Alpha: a personality copied from a human, translated into a computer, and tortured into splitting itself up, becoming several different beings with separate names and functions.
Now imagine the Alpha had split himself up in several different ways, but they had all stayed in proximity to him in the same suit, retaining their different names, functions, and behaviors. This is what I imagine to be similar to Dissociative Identity Disorder.
Pretend that the Alpha manages to retain control, that each fragmented A.I. is given parameters which they must follow to the letter. They may not commandeer the suit at a certain time, they may not fight for control, there is a time and a place for everyone. And then the Alpha commits suicide after the suit has run successfully for about five years.
While most artificial intelligence would most likely come to a reasonable conclusion of who is to be the new Alpha, a human mind so fragmented and splintered would not have the same reasoning capacity. This chaos, the power grab, and the struggle to become something more than broken is what separates a human from a machine.
And this is what I wish to exhibit with We Are The Meta: the growth of a human mind from the brink of insanity to the birth of a complete being. Yes, some of these characters are named after me, some of them are my characters. All humans are allowed a smidgen or two of ego, and I always wanted to be in a book.
